Market Overview Q3 2026: Resilient Markets, Rising Yields, and New Challenges

Our Co-CEO and Head of Finance, Hugo Studhalter, and Chief Investment Officer, Christoph Portmann, share their insights on the third quarter of 2026. The focus is on the impact of rising bond yields, persistent inflation risks, and geopolitical tensions on global markets, as well as the resulting challenges and opportunities for investors.

The third quarter of 2026 was generally positive for risk assets, although headwinds increased significantly. Robust economic growth, substantial investments in artificial intelligence, and solid corporate earnings supported equity markets. At the same time, rising bond yields, geopolitical uncertainty in the Middle East, and persistent inflationary pressures led to a reassessment of the interest rate outlook.

Key Takeaways at a Glance:

  • Global Markets: Resilience Despite Increasing Headwinds
Solid corporate earnings and investments in artificial intelligence supported markets. At the same time, rising bond yields and inflation risks created growing uncertainty and a more challenging market environment.
  • United States: Rising Yields Put Pressure on Growth Stocks
While the S&P 500 and Nasdaq posted modest gains, small-cap stocks significantly underperformed. The yield on 10-year U.S. Treasuries rose to 5.29%, putting particular pressure on highly valued growth stocks.
  • Europe: Sideways Movement Amid Rising Inflationary Pressures
European equity markets remained largely flat. Higher energy prices, geopolitical uncertainty, and the ECB’s interest rate hike weighed on market sentiment. Companies with strong balance sheets and significant pricing power remain better positioned.
  • Switzerland: Interest Rate Differentials Influence the Swiss Franc
While the Swiss National Bank (SNB) kept its policy rate at 0%, the Fed and ECB raised interest rates. As a result, the Swiss franc weakened. For Swiss investors, actively managing foreign currency risks remains essential.
  • Commodities & Crypto: Oil Prices and Cryptocurrencies in Focus
Oil prices rose significantly amid geopolitical tensions, while gold remained relevant as a strategic hedge despite short-term headwinds. Cryptocurrencies performed particularly strongly, with Bitcoin gaining around 43% and Ether approximately 71%.
  • Fineva Strategy: Focus on Quality and Risk Awareness
Rising bond yields are creating attractive entry opportunities again, while the focus in equities remains on companies with strong cash flows and solid balance sheets. Gold remains an important strategic hedge, while cryptocurrencies should continue to be held within clearly defined risk budgets.

Outlook:
For the fourth quarter of 2026, we expect a more challenging market environment with increased volatility. Key factors include developments in U.S. Treasury yields, inflation trends, geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, and the U.S. midterm elections on November 3. Quality companies, infrastructure-related stocks, and solid dividend-paying stocks could offer attractive opportunities in this environment.
